This is the sandwich I’ve been looking for: cheap and satisfying with few frills. Taste Tickler is a small sandwich and bento shop in Northeast Portland. I ordered the 7” namesake “Famous Tickler” sub. I probably could replicate it at home, but what’s the point when this little joint does it so well? Things That I Liked About This Particular Sandwich Freshly baked chewy bread. Delicious triumvirate of ham, salami, and pepperoni. Huge! Not fancy. Things That I Didn’t Like About This Particular Sandwich Could have used some mustard, but that’s only because I am unabashedly pro-mustard when it comes to condiments. I ate it super fast and got a stomachache. It was worth it though. 7” Famous Ticker, $4.75 at Taste Tickler. 10/10.

My mother just whipped up this BLT with the type of dexterity and finesse that can only be obtained by making your child’s lunch every single day of their public school career, K-12. She even put sprouts on it because she knows I need more protein. Thanks Mom! I would eat at the Grilled Cheese Grill every single day if I wasn’t terrified of gaining 8 million pounds and/or dying of cheese toxicity.  This wonderful food cart is mere yards from my house. The first time I ate there the Footloose soundtrack was blasting from inside the dining area, which is a refurbished double-decker bus. The tables are decoupaged with Lifetouch class photos. After fashioning a time machine out of the aforementioned elements, one carton of chocolate milk, and some magical Lisa Frank unicorn stickers, I was instantly transported into Dove Elementary School’s cafeteria circa 1995. And then I ate my grilled cheese and tomato soup and sat by myself and read Little House on the Prairie while my moronic peers traded pogs. Anyway, the sandwich I ordered this time around was The Northsider. Pesto, salami, provolone and tomato on sourdough.  Things That I Liked About This Particular Sandwich Sometimes pesto can be overwhelming, but this sandwich had the perfect amount. Cheese was wonderfully melty, bread was wonderfully toasty. Complimentary pickle. Nostalgia. Things That I Didn’t Like About This Particular Sandwich The salami made it a little greasy, but at least it was the good, cured meat kind of greasy. That’s really it. This sandwich was awesome.  The GCG was also offering a special when I was there: The Seuss, with grilled ham, a fried egg, green onions, and cheddar. Just another example of their grilled cheese ingenuity. The Northsider, $6.25 at The Grilled Cheese Grill. 9/10.
